| 🚒 CONGRATULATIONS, CANDIDATE HONEYCUTT! 🚒
The San Leon Fire would like to give a big congratulations to Candidate Hunter Honeycutt on successfully passing his driving test for his Class B license as he continues his training toward becoming an Engine Operator (EO).
Candidate Honeycutt recently completed our New Member Fire Academy and has also completed his Firefighter I and Firefighter II training, along with his pump operator courses. Hunter has continued to show dedication, commitment, and a willingness to learn every aspect of the fire service.
At San Leon VFD, we strongly believe in becoming a firefighter first before moving into the driver/operator position. Knowing what it is like to be on the other end of the nozzle gives an Engine Operator a much better understanding of fireground operations, water supply, pump pressures, apparatus placement, hose deployment, and most importantly, what the firefighters operating inside or on the attack line need from their driver.
An Engine Operator is much more than the person who drives the truck. They are responsible for getting the apparatus, crew, and equipment safely to the scene, positioning the apparatus correctly, establishing and maintaining a dependable water supply, operating the pump, monitoring pressures, and being prepared to adapt when fireground conditions change. The firefighters on the end of that hose are depending on their Engine Operator to do the job right.
Hunter has already had the opportunity to operate as an EO on his first small fire, gaining valuable real-world experience that cannot be duplicated in the classroom. Every call, every training night, and every hour spent behind the pump builds the knowledge and confidence needed to become a dependable operator.
We also want to recognize Chief Jeff Pittman for his continued time, dedication, and commitment to preparing our members for success. Training firefighters and future Engine Operators takes countless hours behind the scenes—reviewing apparatus operations, driving, pumping, water supply, equipment placement, and fireground decision-making. That investment in our members ultimately makes our entire department stronger and our community safer.
One of the things we are most proud of at San Leon VFD is seeing our newer members continue to advance. We want our firefighters to keep learning, earning certifications, taking on greater responsibilities, and eventually becoming the next generation of Engine Operators, officers, instructors, and leaders of this department.
Passing a test is an accomplishment, but becoming a great Engine Operator comes from experience, repetition, discipline, and never becoming comfortable with what you already know.
Keep up the hard work, dedication, and training, Hunter. This is another major step forward in your fire service career, and we look forward to seeing you in the Engine Operator seat much more often.
