| The San Leon Volunteer Fire Department has responded to several incidents involving downed utility lines in recent days.
In this area, it is common for large vehicles such as 18-wheelers, dump trucks, and trash trucks to come into contact with low-hanging utility or communication lines across roads.
If you experience a sudden loss of power or internet and see a downed line near your home, driveway, or roadway, do not approach it. Call 911 immediately.
Do not attempt to move, lift, or remove a downed line yourself, even if it appears to be a cable or internet line. Every downed line should be treated as if it is energized until utility crews or emergency personnel have confirmed otherwise.
Electricity can travel through wet ground, standing water, fences, vehicles, and other materials that conduct electricity. Standing in wet grass close to an energized line can cause serious injury or electrocution.
Keep children and pets away from any area where a downed line is present. Allow firefighters and utility workers to address the hazard safely.
