The San Leon volunteer fire department offers a multitude of training opportunities. First of all, if you have no firefighting experience at all we offer a new member Academy twice a year a winter Academy which is held in January, and a Summer Academy which is held in August. The purpose of the new member Academy is to bring in an individual interested in serving the community into the San Leon volunteer fire department but doesn’t have any previous training in the fire service. The Academy will last six weeks with training being held on every Tuesday and Thursday evening starting at approximately 6:30 PM. During that same period of time, there will also be three training classes held on a Saturday from 8 AM till 4 PM. The department also offers a number of specialized training classes throughout the year some of which are held on a Tuesday or Thursday evening but the majority of them are held on a weekend. Some of which include pump operations and water supplies, water rescue, rope rescue, auto extrication, command and officer development, fire ground operations, etc.
The fire department also encourages our members to pursue third-party training outside of the department whenever possible. When certain criteria are met the department will fund the cost of tuition either in part or in whole for the outside third-party training.
Also since a large number of our incidents that we respond to are to assist our local EMS provider the department encourages our membership to also pursue training in the area of EMS. The department provides a first responder program for our members that have no previous EMS training. You can also pursue third-party EMS training at our local college of the mainland.
