| A SWAT operation in San Leon ended with a residence catching fire and a suspect being taken into custody.
The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, along with SWAT personnel, responded to the 300 block of 7th Street to serve a warrant. Authorities reported that a person inside the home refused to exit, leading to a standoff.
The San Leon Fire Department had been positioned on 7th Street during the law enforcement operation. When smoke was seen coming from the trailer, firefighters were immediately directed to relocate to 6th Street as the situation changed.
As fire crews repositioned about one block away, flames became visible from the residence. Due to the location and the ongoing law enforcement activity, San Leon firefighters had to stretch hose lines across an entire block and through an open field to reach the burning structure and start fire suppression efforts.
Mutual aid was requested from the Bacliff and Dickinson fire departments to support the response. Despite challenging access and quickly changing fire conditions, San Leon firefighters brought the fire under control in about 20 minutes.
During the incident, SWAT personnel took the suspect into custody, and the individual was treated at the scene.
Captain Maffei of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that SWAT had taken the suspect into custody and stated that the scene remained active as major crimes detectives, identification division staff, and arson investigators continued their investigation.
The circumstances surrounding the fire and the events that led to the warrant service are still under investigation.
The response required coordination between law enforcement, SWAT, firefighters, EMS personnel, and mutual aid agencies working together during a fast-developing and potentially hazardous situation. |
